Running in Circles
Rowdy bunches of toddlers
Ran amuck over my nerves
Celebrating joy, being together
Running in circles
No destination in mind
One by one approaching
With their toys and books
Soon to be, all three
God they are so cute
Sticky and mismatched kids
Reckless abandon for the rules
I so carefully laid out to them
Attacking the upstairs
Like tiny ninja warriors
Or a swarm of angry bees.
Time out for everybody
No talking and TV on news
The oldest screeches
She's touching me Nana
Moving the baby away from her
She says, "I you too Nanny"
Grinning pure cheese
Suppressing a giggle
I address the little boy
Who is addressing me persistently
About the injustice of my actions
They all start yammering
STOP IT! I yell
Silence overtakes the room
Deep sighs and flopping babies
I last about 5 minutes
Okay now stay out of those boxes
And stay downstairs, alright?
Three solemn nods affirm
That they heard me
Hugs and kisses all around
The girls playing quietly
And the boy standing there
"Nina, can you read to me?"
Aren't they the most beautiful kids
Anyone has ever seen
